Love, Women and Flowers
Amor, mujeres y flores
1988
Synopsis
What’s the cost of producing beauty? In the 1970s, foreign companies turned the Bogotá savanna into a flower industry hub, exploiting cheap labor and heavy pesticide use, causing serious health issues and even deaths among the 70,000 women working in the fields.
Editorial
Plucked for Cannes Classics in 2023, this restoration of a deep reckoning with Colombian flower production is, on the surface, profuse with vibrant color. But documentarians Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva attend to the roots of those visual pleasures, dredging up the rot behind the pretty bouquet.
