Numéro zéro
1971
Synopsis
Jean Eustache films his 70-year-old grandmother Odette as she recounts her life—her childhood, her losses, her unfaithful husband, the children she lost, and the hardships she endured. She also expresses her concern for her grandson and great-grandson, whom she hopes to see grow up.
Editorial
Separating reminiscence from rosiness, Jean Eustache’s grandmother is as starkly unsentimental as he is in this talkative documentary. Underseen for decades, Numéro zéro is an absorbing portrait of an ordinary woman whose village gossip chronicles the thorniest realities of postwar rural France.
