Só no Carnaval
1982
Synopsis
It is Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With the help of wives, sisters, and mothers, men continue the time-honored tradition of dressing as women, walking the streets in feminine wigs, skirts, and makeup. Observers and members of the procession contemplate what it is to be a woman only for a day.
Editorial
Through the passing exuberance of drag, Eunice Gutman’s documentary considers how the performance of femininity is playful for some, laborious for others. Ranging from careful, intimate moments of being dolled up to boisterous party scenes, Só no Carnaval observes the two sides to masquerade.
