Synopsis

Bulgaria, 1943. Wehrmacht sergeant Walter oversees Bulgarian workers in a small-town repair shop while nearby Greek Jews await deportation to Auschwitz. Through the camp’s barbed wire, he meets Ruth, a young Jewish woman, and their conversations awaken unexpected feelings and fragile hopes.

Editorial

Awarded the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, this wartime drama by East German director Konrad Wolf opposes Nazi barbarism with tender humanity. Constellating a fulgurant spectrum of cinematic techniques to telegraph the dreams and fears of the Jewish people, Stars is a triumph of art in dark times.
