Summer with Monika
Synopsis
Teenage workers Harry and Monika are falling in love. Wild and restless, Monika, especially, is tired of Stockholm. Escaping by boat, they realize their dream of freedom on the city’s archipelago. But at summer’s end, they return to the mainland—where life looks very different after their dalliance.
Editorial
As fresh as a breeze off the Baltic Sea, Harriet Andersson is athletically lively and radiantly sensual in this dreamily escapist yet bracing coming-of-age romance. That raw performance, and cinematographer Gunnar Fischer’s free camerawork, make Summer with Monika one of Ingmar Bergman’s best.
