Sweet Smell of Success
1957
Synopsis
Ambitious publicity man Sidney Falco will do anything to get back into the good graces of J.J. Hunsecker, New York’s foremost entertainment columnist. Hunsecker asks one thing: that the press agent break up the love match between Hunsecker’s sister, Susie, and jazz musician, Steve, once and for all.
Editorial
A vulpine Burt Lancaster and an unctuous Tony Curtis (“a cookie full of arsenic”) fight tooth-and-nail for dominance in this gutsy, cutthroat noir. Snappy one-upmanship, and a dangerous, pendulum-swinging score by legendary composer Elmer Bernstein bring this viper’s nest–New York into sharp relief.
