Synopsis

Johnson, an agent for the Liquor Control Department, stumbles into the Cuckoo Bird Inn after escaping from a band of cut-throat moonshiners and a mysterious killer. He must discover the identity of the killer before the inn’s occupants turn him into another display in the macabre Chapel of the Dead.

Editorial

Following a limited release, this mid-60s Southern Gothic melodrama disappeared into thin air but has since grown in cult status. A terrifying B-movie nightmare about deranged bootleggers, the film is suffused with a sinister mood, outré performances, and chilling, black-and-white imagery.
