The Tied-Up Balloon
Synopsis
During World War II, a large balloon appears in the skies above a village in Bulgaria and attracts the imaginations of the peasants living there. Marveling at the freedom of the object, and dreaming of taking some liberation for themselves, men chase after this thing of surprising beauty and wonder.
Editorial
Too rollicking in its allegory of man’s folly, Binka Zhelyazkova’s satire spent two decades under the lock and key of Communist censorship. Since then reappraised as an absolute triumph of Bulgarian cinema, The Tied-Up Balloon levitates with the director’s virtuoso talents for deft comedy and play.
