Under the Sun
Synopsis
Vitaly Mansky travels to North Korea to make a film about Zin-mi, a schoolgirl who is preparing to join the Korean Children’s Union. The production is heavily censored by the state and subject to constant supervision. Circumventing his official escort, Mansky begins to record unsanctioned footage.
Editorial
With typically deadpan poise, Vitaly Mansky takes an unprecedented peek behind the curtain of North Korean totalitarianism in this breathtaking exposé. Sneaking unapproved footage past their government minders, the filmmakers capture vanishingly rare evidence of a meticulously stage-managed society.
