Viktor
Synopsis
Kharkiv, 2022. Viktor—who lost his hearing aged five—has two passions: black-and-white photography and samurai culture. When Russia invades Ukraine, he applies to join the army, but is rejected because of his deafness. Intent on defending his country, he instead documents the war with his camera.
Editorial
Capturing the perceptual experience of its subject with innovative sound design, Olivier Sarbil’s intimate film traps Russia’s hostilities in a bell jar. With blade-sharp monochrome imagery, Viktor cleaves ableist discrimination and opens the senses to the untapped potential of the nonfiction genre.
