We Were Young
Synopsis
World War II. In Nazi-occupied Sofia, an antifascist underground cell is plotting to thwart the German forces. Two teenagers among the partisans are drawn to one another—yet young Veska and Dimo will soon find that their romance is threatened by the violence and all-pervasive paranoia of war.
Editorial
Binka Zhelyazkova’s dissident spirit rallies in her prize-winning second feature, in which the somber forces of history overshadow the firefly luminescence of youth and first love. Performing cinematic pirouettes through visionary, kinetic imagery, We Were Young has an eye for beauty amid the dark.
